Scrimshaw: The Whaleman’s Art with Curtis Martin

In this presentation we'll explore the art produced by American whale men, principally on 19th century whaling cruises. Scrimshaw is defined as practical and decorative items made by whaling crews from the materials at hand, principally the teeth and bone of whales , and explores what motivated whale men to engage in this unique craft. It examines the raw materials used, the tools employed, and the techniques for producing scrimshaw. The bulk of the presentation examines the range of products --from tools for use on shipboard; practical gift items such as boxes, baskets, kitchen utensils, canes, and sewing implements; and best-known of all, engraved sperm whale teeth.
