Cape Cod Museum of Natural History: The Silver Science Speaker Series presents: Frontiers in Cooperative Ocean Monitoring

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents the first of the Silver Science Speaker Series events: Frontiers in Cooperative Ocean Monitoring on Thursday, September 4 at 1pm Dr. George Maynard of NOAA Fisheries, Melissa Sanderson of the Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance and Scott Ellis of Lowell Instruments, LLC come together to share their large-scale collaborative efforts to monitor ocean conditions from Maine to New Jersey. Their project, The Environmental Monitors on Lobster Traps and Large Trawlers (eMOLT) program outfits fishing vessels with oceanographic sensors to collect bottom-water temperature data across the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf. They also set up data transmission routines that enable near-real time access to this data, feeding information into oceanographic models and data visualization platforms like Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Associations of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems. This collaboration benefits both fishermen and scientists whose day-to-day work is impacted by ever-changing ocean conditions. George Maynard, Ph.D. works with commercial fishermen in New England to study topics ranging from halibut reproduction to reducing seal interactions with fishing gear. He is also a professor and freelance data analyst. George’s applied research supports Cooperative Research Branch Projects, working closely with stakeholder groups. Melissa Sanderson leads key programs and collaborative research for the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance. She can be found in the space where the best ideas of the small-boat fleet are brought forward to scientists, tried and tested, and worked into regulations to help fish and fishermen. She studied Marine Biology at Occidental College and completed a Masters in Coastal Environmental Management at Duke University. Scott Ellis is the Sales & Marketing Manager at Lowell Instruments LLC. Scott has worked in the data logger industry for over 25 years. Lowell Instruments, LLC provides advanced data loggers, software, and instrumentation to global scientific and engineering communities.
